About Debian buttons
Debian buttons is an addon to Mozilla Firefox web browser adding several toolbar buttons. Pressing a button takes a keyword from the system clipboard and uses it to look up information from some Debian web site. Each button uses a different site.
Example use case
You see mention of Debian bug #654896 and you want to take a look at it. Double-click on the bug number to select it and then click on the 'BTS' button on your toolbar. That's it, no keyboard involved. Don't worry if double-clicking selects the leading dash or a trailing coma etc. The selection is cleaned automatically. Clicking on the button with the middle mouse button opens the information page in a new browser tab.
Same way can be used for looking up a package in the Package Tracking System etc. Just select the input data and press the button you need.
Available buttons
- BTS – Debian Bug tracking System. Input: bug number or package name.
- PTS – Debian Package Tracking System. Input: (source) package name.
- deb – Debian package. Input: (binary) package name.
- @ – Debian mailing lists. Input: Message-ID.
- DD – Debian Developer Packages Overview. Input: maintainer email (uid is enough for DDs)
- bldd – Build daemon logs. Input: source package name.
- sec – Security tracker. Input: source package name or CVE ID.
Installation
The easiest way to install Debian buttons is to use the page at addons.mozilla.org. Debian users would want to use the package.
No buttons?
No buttons are added to the toolbar by default.
After installing the addon and restarting the browser, right-click on any toolbar and select Customize…. A dialog window will open containing available toolbar buttons. Find the Debian buttons you need and drag them on your toolbar. That's it.
In the future the addon may add a 'Debian' toolbar and fill it with all available buttons automatically, but this needs to be done in a way that is not annoying to users that have already placed the buttons they need.
